The surface that I used was regular sketchbook paper that I triple gessoed prior to laying out the grid lines. These charts on paper, once dried, slip easily into 8.5 x 11 page protector sheets and into a duotang book for easy transport to plein air painting locations, workshops, or just to have handy in the studio.
Here's the layout that I've used for the grid sheets.
I mark one out carefully with a ruler, then hold it up to the window and place the second sheet on top. I then mark where the horizontal and vertical lines are, then return to the ruler and draw them in. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions.
